ratboys the window review

review

what a fucking good album this is – definitely in the top 3 of my favorite albums from 2023

it kicks off right off the bat with this little bit of eerie grey noise which turns into a high energy punk song and you think oh you know i can see where this is going but then the next song, morning zoo, is this mellow wilco-ish indie song

it just has so much sonic variety, great instrumentals, and just sincere lyrics that never fail to feel intimate

one of my favorite aspects of the album is just how much they let the instrumentals and just everything shine by just letting it breathe

songs don’t feel rush or cramped – an example would be black earth, wi

that instrumental break goes on for ever, but it is so fucking good – the guitar, the drums, the change of pacing, everything

so many songs just have these breaks in which you just hear the instruments and just get engulfed in the song

the album just feels so raw

songs like the window, break, and making noise for the ones you love in which the topic is losing someone you love and the entire album referencing that repeatedly

other songs like morning zoo and no way which have a more existential and nihilistic view

then you have the i want you(fall 2010) type lovey song

the approach to these topics feel so personal and real

there really is a lot to this album

the instrumentals go from punk to indie to country, and it just adds so much replay value

it is on the shorter side too, so it never overstays its welcome at only 47 minutes

the singing isn’t the most diverse, but it feels as if that’s part of it – its from the heart

on the topic of from the heart, the window is a fantastic song and it is everything i love from this album in one short 4 minute track – listen to it

its honestly a really great album

score 5/5 its great i promise
