jessica jalbert brother loyola review

review

for a while there, i had hit a groove when it came to writing reviews

then i hit a music block – which happens every once in a while

a music block to me is a period of time in which i listen to music but find it impossible to get to the point of enjoying it so much that i want to write about it

it sucks, but it happens and all i can do is just wait

this album fortunately snapped me out of that

brother loyola is a heavenly majestic sounding album with great guitar, bass, and cello work behind it

a nice blend of relaxing magical music and strong high energy music

the discussion of topics such as growing up and being not sure who you are or where you’re going and about just going with the flow is something that is very relatable to me and its something i naturally gravitate to as a confused ‘young’ person

it is also extremely short at only 30 minutes which is something i find myself enjoying more and more

i just think short albums allow artists to not overstay their welcome and get the most out of the wing they’re chewing on and not gnaw the bone

there is basically no filler aside from maybe o evening colors which was by far my least favorite track

the autotune was definitely a choice, and it was not my cup of tea especially when a big part of why i enjoyed this album so much was her vocal performances which the autotune just destroyed

as to what this album does well, i believe it’s exemplified by my favorite song of the album, stupid hollow

catchy and laidback songs with half unsure about life half tongue in cheek lyrics

as to what this album does really well, it is the band

as i mentioned earlier, the cello, cornet, trombone, guitar, and bass go stupid hard throughout this entire album and really piece it together

the fact it’s her playing the cornet makes it so much more impressive as in songs like daniels, it’s the best part of the song

the bass in lack of a lake is also just fantastic and throughout the entire album there is standout performances by different parts of the band

sadly, this is the only album released by her with the only additional thing i could find being a cover on bandcamp

she does continue to make music though, under the name of faith healer which i myself havent checked out yet but i definitely will

overall, i can see myself going back to this album for its really peaceful ambiance and endearing vocal performance

endearing album 4/5
