gorillaz plastic beach album review

review

alright alright alright

gorillaz is another one of those bands that I KNOW i should listen to and that I HAVE listened to but never really dove into (there’s not enough time in the world, and i like videogames)

this was my first gorillaz project that i heard front to back and fully paid attention to

it was pretty fucking sick

/

the intro is really captivating, the anti-war dystopian messaging is perfectly blended into the music (somehow not corny), and the songs are just so catchy

the feature list is also just stacked, with features from snoop, yasiin, de la soul, little dragon, and lou reed

the production is fantastic – songs like rhinestone eyez, superfast jellyfish, some kind of nature, and on melancholy hill just ooze fun

its hard to not lose yourself in the world that is being shown to you; it is truly an immersive experience

radioactive lakes, acid rain, trash – you gotta love it

it also avoids a trap which i think many albums with unique sound face, they get repetitive

they find their sound for the album, they stick to it, and that is that

this album does not do that; it finds its sound in many different ways, but it still fits together all the same

/

i’ll hear demon days and humanz sometime in the near future but until then

favorite songs – welcome to the world of the plastic beach, rhinestone eyes, superfast jellyfish, some kind of nature, on melancholy hill, sweepstakes, plastic beach, and cloud of unknowing (i like a lot of songs, whooooops)

great album 4/5 (super close to a 5; we’ll see as time goes on)
