there is nothing wrong with liking certain artists or having influences but i do believe there is such a thing as wearing your influences on your sleeve

i believe this album does that with frank ocean

its not necessarily a bad thing – that sound is fun to listen to – the thing is i find that i enjoy when he takes those influences and pushes it a bit more forward and inserts his personality and his taste

come over and distance are the perfect example – the frank ocean influence essentially radiates off these songs

you compare that with summers gone where sure you can hear the influences, but the switch up mid song is something different and entertaining

or rearrange with the choir like intro, lyrics about his struggle to find his place due to his privileged upbringing while still being a poc, the struggles of the pandemic, and the difficulty in finding your way back to normalcy

these are the songs that catch my attention and it feels like he is being himself

there is nothing wrong with come over, distance, or no judgement – these are nice songs

theyre entertaining it just doesnt feel like i am experiencing something new or hearing an exciting up and coming artist

you pair that with the questionable artist bio on spotify rambling about how he carries himself with the “emotional depth and philosophical wisdom of a man twice his age” and it just gives me a weird feeling

either way, it was definitely worth the listen to

good album 3/5
