lil yachty lets start here album review

review

this album was extremely surprising, shocking even

if you told me a year ago that lil yachty would make one of my if not my favorite album 2 months into the year and that it would be an alternative rock album, there is no shot i would have ever believed you

yet here we are

this album defied all of my expectations

being 24, when lil yachty started to pop i was his target audience essentially – i enjoyed his music casually and well it was just fun dumb music

music you listen with your friends when you’re all just stoned out of your mind just having fun

and like most of the other artists that made dumb fun music for dumb teenagers like me, while they were on top they were shit on endlessly by “the industry” with everyone just openly accepting their fame was a flash on the pan and they then just faded into irrelevancy

lil yachty in particular was ridiculed by what felt like everyone

that is why this album is so remarkable for me

in pretty, yachty talks about he feels he cant really complain or talk about his problems when he is by every metric to a regular person extremely successful

i cant imagine having that mindset when the entire world is just spitting on you as it was during a certain point in his career

and overall this album to me spoke a lot about yachtys perspective on life and his fame and his realization that nothing really matters but him, his creative process, and his loved ones and just everything that makes him human

thats not to even mention the actual sound of the album

which is insane by itself and an incredible first attempt/homage at alt/psych rock

his singing is a common pain point for some people but im a big fan – its extremely unique

in certain songs it can be a little off putting such as in the paint the sky – but in songs like say something and should i b? i fucking love it

the production is just top tier – its grand, its atmospheric, and engulfing

the black seminole, the zone, we saw the sun, the alchemist, and reach the sunshine are just oozing energy

the transitions in between the songs are perfect and the album holds together extremely well

drive me crazy! and pretty i wasnt the biggest fan of

pretty is a little too much for me but the production and the singing is there

the verses and concept just arent for me

as for drive me crazy! i was not a fan of his singing or his verse in this and honestly out of all the love songs it was the least interesting (there is quite a bit of love songs) (diana gordon goes crazy though)

overall this album is a great surprise and i am interested where he goes from here

who fucking knew

great album 4/5
