my experience with war novels is extremely limited. most of the stuff i read tends to be sci-fi or just whatever i can find on some random 4chan list. i tend to stick with stuff that is “must read” since at the end of the day i dont have much free time. well i do but i spend most of it playing video games, piano, or hanging out with my girlfriend, and that all takes up quite a bit of time. point being, i read what is held in high esteem since i deem that as a good way of spending my time rather than just reading whatever book that may suck.
one of my friends is a big movie/show watcher, and he was planning on watching the new aqotwf movie on netflix, but he wanted to read the book first. he mentioned that to me, and i thought to myself why not join him? i googled a bit and found 5 star reviews all over, and well that was enough to make it worth my time in my eyes. i ended up going to a bookstore nearby in the following days, and i went along on my journey.
the book was certainty worth my time, to say the least. everyone knows “war is bad”, but this book depicts the realities of war so well that it just beats into you an understanding that even though you knew “war is bad” you never quite understood what these soldiers went through, especially when youre talking about ww1. everything seemed so personal, far from the detachment that can take place nowadays when youre droning someone a million miles away.
as someone within the age range of these characters, it quite humbles you. i have my tough days; i have my days where i feel things are not fair. that is nothing compared to what some generations have had to endured, solely due to chance.
