review
tame impala’s newest album, deadbeat, just came out one week ago
5 years and change since their latest release, the slow rush
overall the album is sonically pleasant, i enjoyed the experimentation with damn near european club dance music – it was a cool mix of styles and that alongside the traditional tame impala sound fit together extremely well
the album was also nearly an hour long which is my sweet spot for albums
it kicked off with the opening track which i loved, my old ways
the way the song kicked off with a more acoustic version then transitioned into the fully produced version was really well done – the song is crazy catchy, and it is very atmospheric – it really brings you into this album and the song overall laid out the theme for the album which is basically him fighting against himself and his more hedonistic tendencies
in fact i’d say the first 3 songs in general are my favorites from the project and i had great hopes for it at that point
it wasn’t until later on in which some of the more hollow songs came up that my feelings became more mixed
songs like oblivion, not my world, piece of heaven, obsolete, and see you on monday were a drag at certain points and i thought quite hollow
one of the things in general that i found myself complaining about was the subject matter which seemed a bit uh idk fratboyish?
the whole premise of this album and just how woe is me it is turned me off at certain points
it feels like i am listening to one of my friends who i know is a douchebag explain why what he is doing to his partner is okay when it’s not and while it can be fine and it does lead to interesting point of views in certain songs like my old ways, dracula, etherreal connection, and end of summer – it was outweighed by the hollow feeling i got during other points and is just not my thingthat being said, my least favorite song is not my world as it feels as if he turned the inability to not be a jerk off into a personality trait and made it about how different he is from regular people
it also has the issue which i had with the slow rush which is that although the songs are sonically pleasing i do seem to yearn for more substance at times and they can feel a bit too hollow with the writing
overall though, it is worth a listen as i think the more electronic sound with the traditional tame impala sound is a great mix
very dancy very fun
